UL creates toolkit to get prepped for IEC 62368-1, 2nd edition

The 2nd edition of IEC 62368-1 is the new safety standard for all A/V and ICT equipment. It permanently replaces 60065 and 60950-1. Compliance is mandatory from June 20, 2019 in many major global markets, including the US, Canada and the European Union. UL is currently preparing a transition toolkit – featuring an interactive guide, expert Q&As, a knowledge base, access to webinars, workshops and podcasts, downloads and much more. It will be launched in summer 2016.

IEC 62368-1 offers manufacturers significant benefits over the legacy standards, particularly for new and innovative constructions. This reflects both the intent of the international technical committee responsible (IEC TC108), as well as the advantages of the safety testing protocol at the heart of 62368-1: Hazard-based Safety Engineering (HBSE). Manufacturers will also be relieved to know that IEC 62368-1 has been designed to avoid supply-chain disruptions during the transition phase.

IEC 62368-1 is performance-based, and via its hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) foundation, emphasizes the need to design safety into the product at an early phase of product development. This means that design engineers need time to understand the new standard and how to use it to their advantage. A number of companies have already begun to certify their products to 62368-1, including Samsung, Lenovo and Alpha Products.

UL has played a significant role in the development of IEC 62368-1, and has been certifying to IEC 62368-1 (2nd edition) since 2014. Once completed, our online 62368-1 transition toolkit will help you complete your transition smoothly.
